Many parents wonder, “When should my child go to the dentist for the first time?”
You might be surprised—experts recommend a much earlier start than most people think.

As we celebrated our first Anniversary in our Piscataway office here at Smile Garden, we were reminded of a question we get asked all the time.
When IS the right time for a first pediatric dentist visit?
The Official Recommendation
Based on guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and the American Dental Association (ADA) your child should have their first dental checkup as soon as the first tooth emerges, within 6 months of a first tooth, or by their first birthday depending on the source.
But don’t worry if you didn’t know that. Again, most people don’t! The recommendation is early because research has shown that the sooner you start thinking about your child’s dental care, the earlier good dental hygiene habits can be established.
This leads to better preventative care and overall improved dental outcomes.
The Importance of Early Visits
Prevent Cavities Before They Start
Your pediatric dentist can spot early signs of tooth decay and give tips to keep your child’s teeth healthy

Track Growth and Development
We monitor how your child’s teeth and jaws are growing to catch potential issues early.

Reduce Dental Anxiety
Starting early helps your child feel comfortable at the dentist, making future visits stress-free.

Guidance for Parents
You’ll get personalized advice on brushing, flossing, teething, and nutrition.
Signs It’s Time to See a Dentist
Even if your child is older and hasn’t had their first dental visit, it’s never too late to start.
Schedule an appointment right away if you notice:
- Injuries to the mouth or teeth
- Tooth pain or sensitivity
- Abnormal white or brown spots on teeth
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away, even after brushing
- Difficulty chewing or speaking due to pain

How Often Should Kids See the Dentist?
After the first visit, most children should have check-ups every six months.
Some may need more frequent visits if they are prone to cavities or have special dental needs, something that we could discuss as a part of their treatment plan.
