Halloween Candy Tips for Kids
Can kids enjoy Halloween candy and still have healthy teeth? Absolutely! At Smile Garden Pediatric Dentistry in Piscataway, we want families to enjoy the costumes, treats, and community events. A few easy habits can help care for little smiles along the way.
Which Halloween Candies Are Better for Teeth?
It melts and clears from teeth more easily than sticky candy.
They cling to teeth and can be harder to clean away.
Its acidity can wear down tooth enamel.
They keep sugar in the mouth longer, and biting hard candy can chip a tooth.
Why Are We Handing Out Zollipops?
We’ll be handing out Zollipops® this fall as a fun way to help “scare the sugar bugs away!” Regular sugar feeds cavity-causing bacteria, which produce acids that can damage teeth.
Zollipops are sugar-free and use different sweeteners. According to Zolli Candy’s ingredient list for Original Zollipops, those sweeteners include isomalt syrup, erythritol, and stevia — making them a tooth-friendlier swap for a regular sugary lollipop.
They’re still a treat, though, and they don’t replace brushing with fluoride toothpaste.
Five Easy Halloween Habits for Busy Families
- 1Enjoy candy with a meal instead of nibbling on it throughout the day.
- 2Let kids choose their favorites and put the rest away for another day.
- 3Offer plain water after treats and while trick-or-treating.
- 4Check the candy bag for open wrappers and treats that aren’t appropriate for your child’s age.
- 5Brush before bed with fluoride toothpaste, and floss where teeth touch. Younger kids need a parent’s help, especially after a long, exciting night.
